by Kayla May

Oswego, NY — Oct. 7, 2016 — Night racing at the 45th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week has been long in the making and worth the wait.

“It was a lot of work what we did to get to this point in 70 days. A project like this usually takes 8 months to do, so to finally kick it off means we’re here,” says Jeff Hachmann, Director of Events for DIRTcar Racing.

Martin and Farnham Make History in Futures

Sportsman Futures make first appearance at Oswego

by Brendan Capria

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oct. 7, 2016 – Greg Martin and Matt Farnham shared the spotlight Friday, winning their respective DIRTcar Sportsman Futures features at Oswego Speedway. After two consecutive off-site shows as a part of the 45th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week, the tour laid rubber onto Oswego dirt for the first time this week.

Martin started off the day strong, recording the fastest lap time in practice with a 24.047. He said getting the on-track experience was most valuable in a day of many successes. The “Clay Palace” tested the drivers’ skills, and Martin said it was definitely a “neat” track. He embraced the challenges of the inaugural host of Super DIRT Week.

“She’s a slick one,” Martin said. “The car was really good in turn one, and it felt really good out of [turn] four too. Now if I can figure out the other two I’ll be good for tomorrow. It’s just an honor to win the first futures race at Oswego.”

Flower Power: Philips Family Cultivates Super DIRT Week History

Philips family creates Victory Lane wreaths for Super DIRT Week

by Brendan Capria

Bryan Philips was put to the test this week, 18 years ago. The conundrum: he could either be in the grandstands of NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week or at the alter to marry the love of his life, Robin. The two joked about the ultimatum all the way up until that Saturday, when Bryan traded in his race t-shirt for a spiffy tuxedo. There was one vow in particular, though, that made it all worthwhile to him.

Robin promised Bryan he would never miss another Super DIRT Week from thereon out. So for one week of each year, Bryan celebrates his two greatest loves in life – Robin and dirt racing. While Super DIRT Week is one of the sport’s biggest stages, it now holds added significance for him.

by Kayla May

Oswego, NY— Oct. 7, 2016 — The Pro Stock Futures hit the dirt this morning for practice and the first feature race of the 45th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week.

Futures Feature Winner Jason Meltz, from Genesis, NY, had only stepped into a pro stock car twice leading up to today’s race.

“I’ve been racing for 10 years, and I usually race Pure Stock. I jumped into Pro Stock for this race. I’ve only raced this kind of a car a few times before. I was just hoping to make the race today and be a competitor, and so to win this race it feels so good,” said Meltz.

Marcuccilli Makes Time

Records fastest lap in Sportsman time trials

by Brendon Capria

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oct. 7, 2016 – David Marcuccilli was surprised Friday when he recorded the fast time in time trials during the 45th running of the NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week at Oswego Speedway. The last time the Cayuga, N.Y. driver raced at the 5/8-mile, it was paved. But for him, the dirt racing experience is unparalleled.

“The [Sportsman cars] weren’t any fun on asphalt,” Marcuccilli said. “The dirt will be fun. The [track] did a very good job for the time they had. It was a little tricky but we had a good car.”

When Right Is Left: Flagging at Oswego, Tougher Than it Looks

by Clayton Johns, with Brendan Capria

OSWEGO, NY – Dave Farney has spent over 20 years flagging dirt track racing, but Oswego Speedway presents a first-time experience at the 45th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week.

Farney, nicknamed the “director of traffic control” by announcer Shane Andrews, has been atop the flag stand at dozens of racetracks, but Oswego is the first facility where he’s flagged from inside the track.

“I didn’t prepare. I’m not used to it at all. I’m looking down the track from right to left, and it’s completely opposite of everything I’ve ever done at any racetrack,” Farney said.
